Map the City:
A Yearlong 7th Grade Math Project

Part 1: Circles in the City [Due 11/17]

Students are applying their knowledge of circles to a real-world project that explores neighborhood resources in New York City. They will select two neighborhoods, draw a walkable circle around a central location in each, and analyze the amenities within those areas such as parks, schools, and grocery stores.
Using circle formulas, students will calculate area and circumference, compare access to resources, and reflect on how these differences impact quality of life. The project combines math skills with research and critical thinking, and students will present their findings in a poster or short presentation. This activity helps students see how math connects to urban planning and equity in their own city.
